Sacred Travel: Giza Pyramid Complex
#holythrowback to 2021 when I visited the Giza Pyramid Complex in Giza, Egypt.
There is no landmark more globally recognisable than these pyramids, and even better, their splendour is far higher than the hype. When asked to name my favourite location from all my travels, here is number one.
Built between 2584 and 2561 BC (!!!!), these towering pieces are not only the oldest entry of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, but also the exclusive participants to remain standing. The largest of the lot is the Great Pyramid of Giza, reaching 138.5 metres, which was the tallest human-made structure for 3,800+ years.
Perhaps the primary highlight is the Great Sphinx of Giza. Probably representing pharaoh Khafre on the body of a lion, it’s surely the most famous statue in the world.
The Ancient Egyptian civilisations were one of the first to consider an afterlife. Hence, these pyramids served as tombs for the pharaohs, keeping their ka (spirit) lighter than the feather of Maat. If successful, the lord of the dead and rebirth, Osiris, would allow them to enter the paradise of Aaru.
Due to the pyramids’ unfathomable impressiveness and their astronomical alignment, many people still believe the aliens made these structures. My official stance is maybe, maybe not.
As far as polytheistic awesomeness goes, Ancient Egypt is in the highest tier. Sadly, Christianity converted the land during the 3rd - 4th centuries, then Islam took over around 646 AD, still dominating today with 90.64% of the population following. It breaks my heart because imagine they’d held strong like the Hindus? How would have their expansive canon of trippy deities evolved by now? We will never know, but we should bring it back.
