Sacred Travel: Holy Trinity Cathedral
#holythrowback to earlier 2022, when I visited the Holy Trinity Cathedral in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
The fact that this establishment is the city’s most celebrated landmark (and the highest-ranking Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Cathedral) is secondary to another special feature. For in here, one can visit the tomb of Haile Selassie.
Haile Selassie is adored in these parts. As the Emperor of Ethiopia from 1930 to 1974, he completely modernised the country by abolishing slavery and becoming a charter member of the United Nations. But what’s even crazier is where the Rastafari movement comes in. You see, the Rastas considered the crowning of Selassie as a Biblical prophecy, and to this day, they are convinced Haile was the second-coming of Christ. God incarnate! Ethiopia, the promised land!!!
Selassie acknowledged the title, cleverly never affirming or denying it. Sadly, when he was 82 years old, he was imprisoned by the military junta Derg and then most likely murdered, the remains of his body right here.
I’m not sure anyone will appreciate how nuts this is for me. According to quite a famous branch of the Abrahamic narrative with almost a million Rastafarian devotees, I touched the final resting place of Jesus Christ himself. That’s not an everyday occurrence. It’s real sacred stuff.
Religion in Ethiopia is fascinating. It was one of the first Christian countries in the world (4th century), and 67.3% of the population remained that way. It’s the only Northern African region to survive the expansion of Islam. Their Biblical canon is also mad (Orthodox Tewahedo), featuring 81 books, more than any other version. It includes the controversial Book of Enoch where angels/demons/aliens impregnated human women.
