Sacred Travel: Tempio Hindu
#holythrowback to 2022 when I visited The Tempio Hindu in Victoria, Seychelles.
Also known as the Arulmigu Navasakti Vinayagar Temple, this highly detailed place of Hindu worship looks exceptionally similar to various others found around the world, such as the Sri Mahamariamman Temple in Kuala Lumpur or the Sri Maha Mariamman Temple in Bangkok. However, the main difference is, of course, that we’re not in Asia. We’re in Africa!
Tempio Hindu is the only Seychelles temple dedicated to everyone’s favourite deity, Lord Ganesha. That said, many divine figures are on display, including Murugan, Durga, Sreenivasa Perumal, and Chandekeswarar. Offerings (especially milk) are made to these gods on different occasions, with the most notable celebratory event being the Taippoosam Kavadi Festival. This tradition started here in 1993 and has grown so popular that the Seychelles government proclaimed it a holiday for Hindus in 1998.
Hinduism is the second biggest religion in Seychelles, and it’s growing. However, considering its 2.4% demographic, it doesn’t seem all that impressive. Instead, the close to 90% Christianity (76.2% Roman Catholic) rules the land, and that is unlikely to change in any of our lifetimes.
