Sacred Travel: Westpark Cemetery
#holythrowback to 2022 when I visited Westpark Cemetery in Johannesburg, South Africa.
Established in 1942, there are many impressive facts about this (still active!) graveyard. Perhaps my favourite aspect is that it&8217;s non-denominational, offering bits of land to the Christians (photo 1), the Muslims (photo 6), and even those of Chinese faiths (photo 5). But none are better represented than the Jewish people.
As per their tradition, the Jewish section is separated from the rest using tall fences (photo 2). But once inside, you can explore the expansive grounds, which include the burial site for South African musician royalty Johnny Clegg. The country adored this guy, especially because he was a caucasian man who fought against apartheid with his songs, earning the title The White Zulu. He died from pancreatic cancer in 2019 at age 66 (photos 3 & 4).
Other notable locations are the 617 graves for Commonwealth service personnel of WW2 (photo 7) and the Six Million Memorial (photo 8), remembering the Jews murdered during the holocaust. The influential Kwaito musician Mandoza is also buried here somewhere.
The final two photos are from the particularly eerie child division.
An insane 78% of South Africa are Christian. The African-Initiated Church constitutes around 25% of the population. Sadly, Traditional African religions only count for 4.4%, having been beaten down by the beliefs above. This includes the faith of the indigenous San People, famously one of the oldest cultures on Earth, with evidence of their presence dating back to 42,000 BC. There are an estimated 105,000 of them left on the planet.
