Sacred Travel: Bahai House of Worship Uganda
#holythrowback to 2022 when I visited the Baha’i House of Worship in Kampala, Uganda.
The Baha’i Faith religion is well-represented around the globe. Nevertheless, there are only 13 official Baha’i Houses of Worship worldwide, at least one on each continent (excluding Antarctica, of course). There are also many more to come, with reports of 120 properties intended for future Houses of Worship.
The structures themselves are, without a doubt, some of the most beautiful pieces of architecture you’ll ever see, made even cooler because they look so widely different. However, they all must adhere to the same strict guidelines, such as a nine-sided shape, nine pathways, and nine gardens. According to the faith, nine is the holiest number, as it is essentially the highest you can reach before you combine smaller numerals.
The third House completed ever was this one in Uganda, 1961, placing their foothold into African soil. It’s quite a climb up Kikaya Hill to visit it, but like every place of Baha’i worship, the grounds do not disappoint. Unfortunately for you, photography inside the House is prohibited, which is another common thread across their establishments.
The Baháʼí Faith’s noble intention to merge all religions is a beacon of hope in our divided world. This principle resonates with Janthopoyism, and we have often celebrated it. For this reason, in 2024, we shall be studying the Kitáb-i-Aqdas, their most sacred text. Stay tuned for a full analysis later this year!
Over 85% of the Ugandan population are Christians. Islam comes in second with 13.7%. Sadly, Baháʼí Faith barely registers, with 29,601 followers reported in 2014, sometimes claimed as 0.1%, although certainly much less.
