Sacred Travel: Kasubi Royal Tombs
#holythrowback to 2022, when I visited the Kasubi Royal Tombs in Kampala, Uganda.
Within these big huts, they have buried four generations of Buganda kings. In addition, various graves for royal relatives are dotted about while living female descendants stay here for free, food and pocket money provided.
A massive fire in 2010 has left much under construction, but the Japanese government stepped in and are financially assisting the rebuild.
The Baganda people once held a rich indigenous religion similar to other traditional African beliefs, where a spirit world exists beyond our understanding as the creator god, Katonda, rules above all.
Sadly, like too many stories, the colonisation and conversion from the British Empire forced the country towards Christ, the faith still dominating Uganda today with 84.4% devotees. But you can never take Africa out of Africa, and much of their ancient practices persist, albeit merged into some wobbly Christian narrative.
