Sacred Travel: Uganda National Mosque
#holythrowback to 2022 when I visited the Uganda National Mosque in Kampala, Uganda.
Completed in 2006, this Islamic holy location can hold almost 20,000 worshipers, making it the largest mosque in East Africa. What’s more, due to its 116 ft tall Minaret tower, it is the only "skyscraper mosque" in the country.
Speaking of the Minaret, visitors are permitted to climb the 304 stairs to the top. And when considering the mosque is already placed upon Kampala Hill in the dead centre of the capital, you would struggle to find more impressive 360 views of the city anywhere else.
Colonel Muammar Gaddafi of Libya paid for the mosque’ construction as a gift to Ugandan Muslims. Hence, the original name for this place of worship was Gaddafi National Mosque. But because Gaddafi was such a divisive figure, his 2011 death offered the community the chance to rename it, which they did.
Regardless, Islam counts for only 13.7% of the country’s religious demographic. Christianity remains the dominating force, at 84%. However, like much of Africa, these faiths are frequently mixed with traditional ideas, with 27% of Ugandans believing that sacrifices to their ancestors will protect them from evil.
