Sacred Travel: Victoria Falls
#holythrowback to 2022 when I visited Victoria Falls near Livingstone, Zambia (and Zimbabwe).
Victoria Falls is not the highest (354 ft) nor the widest (5,604 ft) waterfall in the world, but it sure is the largest due to a combination of the two, creating the biggest sheet of falling water anywhere.
Originally named Mosi-oa-Tunya (The Smoke That Thunders), this natural wonder is a sacred area according to the native Sotho-Tswana people. Of course, such a divine presence is not argued against by anyone, the only factor that has changed being the name.
David Livingstone was the Scottish missionary who “discovered” the falls and promptly named it after his Queen. There have been many debates about reverting to the Tonga brand, but one reason it has not happened is that the locals revere Mr Livingstone. He fervently opposed the slave trade, and he never liked the idea of colonisation, preferring the concept of settlements that taught Christianity, nothing else. That is why the nearest town is called Livingstone, and his statue stands proudly on the western bank.
Victoria Falls lies on the border between two countries. If you wish to marvel at the unfathomable power of this ecological phenomenon, you’ll need to stand on the Zimbabwe side. But if you want to experience the intensely scary force of the water, you’ll need to climb in on the Zambia side, where the “Devil’s Pool” and “Angel’s Pool” will reveal a version of yourself you never knew. I swear, I almost died in a panic here. But it remains one of my most treasured memories of all time.
Thanks to Livingstone and Co., Zimbabwe and Zambia are predominantly Christian (95.5% and 84.1%, respectively). However, they haven’t let go of their traditional ancestor worship known as Badimo.
