Sacred Travel: Lotus Temple
#holythrowback to 2019 when I visited the Lotus Temple in New Delhi, India.
As a Baháʼí House of Worship, this temple welcomes anyone and everyone, regardless of religion or lack thereof. It’s a fortunate thing, too, because nobody should miss out on viewing an architectural masterpiece as magnificent as this structure.
Named due to its lotus shape, it is like every Baháʼí Faith building in that it features nine entrances. The reason is that the faith acknowledges nine great world religions: Christianity, Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism, Taoism, Shinto, Sikhism, Judaism, and Baháʼí Faith. A big part of founder Baháʼu’lláh’s intentions was to unify these beliefs as a single system, but of course, he just ended up making another one.
Baháʼí Faith holds a lot of outdated sentiments (drinking, premarital sex, and homosexuality are forbidden). Still, in many other fundamental viewpoints, Janthopoyism considers ourselves, Baháʼí, and Theosophy to be kindred spiritual organisations in that we see each religion as valid and even interchangeable. For that, it is up there with my favourite theologies.
Close to 80% of India practices Hinduism, with Islam coming in second at 14.2%. Despite this treasure of a landmark, Baháʼí Faith does not even register in the statistics. Regardless, you can expect much more content to come from historically the world’s holiest country.
