#holythrowback to 2023 when I visited The Borobudur Temple, Magelan Regency, Central Java, Indonesia.
What makes The Borobudur Temple so important? How about that it is THE BIGGEST BUDDHIST TEMPLE IN THE WHOLE FREAKING WORLD.
Constructed in the 9th century with nine stacked levels, see if you can count 504 Buddha statues. It’s tricky because so many are missing their heads! Stolen and placed in museums. Typical!
Around the early 14th century, Indonesia transitioned to Islam, and this structure was abandoned, falling into disarray. However, a massive restoration project between the Indonesian government and UNESCO returned it to some former glory, and now it is considered a Buddhist pilgrimage site as officially the most-visited monument in the country.
If you love religion, then the variation of Indonesia’s beliefs combines into an exciting pot. Most tourists flock to Bali, where 86.9% of that province worships through Balinese Hinduism. However, as previously noted, Indonesia is a strongly Islamic country, with 87.02% of the total population identifying as Muslims. With only 0.73% documented Buddhists, it’s unfitting that the world’s largest Buddhist temple stands here! To make my stop even more enriching, I landed during Ramadan, which emphasised the unique religious amalgamation of this nation, certainly one I’ll never forget.
