Sacred Travel: Shibuya Halloween
#holythrowback to 2019, when I visited the Shibuya ward in Tokyo, Japan for their take on the Halloween celebration.
The history of our Halloween practice is debated somewhere between exclusive Christian and more paganistic Gaelic folk traditions. As the harvest period transitions into winter, it is said the wall separating the spirit reality and ours grows thin, allowing crossovers. This opportunity led to concepts and activities so exciting that the spooky season spread across the globe, cherished by everyone from Abrahamics to atheists to Satanists and beyond.
One of the most thrilling locations to experience the madness is here in Shibuya, where around 40,000 people flood the streets purely to show off their costumes and snap photos of each other. That’s all! I mean, Japan’s capital is nuts on any given day, but this was several dimensions left of insane. I implore you to google this yourself because my hand does not do it justice. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS ADVENTURE.
Japan’s primary beliefs are Buddhism (67.2%) and their indigenous religion Shinto (70.5%). You’ll notice it adds up to 137.7% because, unlike the silly West, Eastern peeps understand that multiple faiths are required to find your spiritual path.
