Sacred Travel: The Holy Rosary Parish Church
#holythrowback to 2023 when I visited The Holy Rosary Parish Church in Angeles City, Philippines.
Founded in 1877, this Roman Catholic church’s construction history isn’t ideal, as the Spanish colonial government forced Filipino males to work 40 days per year without pay, in what was known as the “Polo y Servicio”. But something that makes this particular sight easier to digest... is eggs.
Strange yet true, builders used egg whites as an emulsifier for the concrete. They state that the substance makes their religious establishments more durable, and as time has passed, there is evidence to prove such a claim. That’s why the tour guides say, “Our churches are made from eggs”, which isn’t a lie. However, this unique process meant the people had millions of egg yolks and nowhere to put them. Except their mouths, of course. Bring in San Nicolas cookies, a traditional Filipino dessert baked using those leftover yellows!
In 2019, the Luzon earthquake struck, killing 18 and injuring 256. The Holy Rosary Parish Church was severely damaged but still stood strong. Because of the power of Jesus? Or the eggs? You decide.
Despite its East Asian location, the Philippines has not followed the Dharmic/Taoic path and is instead a primarily Christian nation. With 84% adhering to Christ (78.8% Catholic), it is the only country in the region besides East Timor where Christianity dominates. On that note, Angeles is also one of the most sinful of the world’s Sin Cities. Its Walking Street (photos 7 & 8) is overflowing with parties and prostitution, leading to an inpouring of naughty sex tourism. Unsure how they reconcile these two philosophies, but they make a plan as they make their money.
