Sacred Travel: Wat Pho
#holythrowback to 2019, when I visited Wat Pho in Bangkok, Thailand.
Originally known as Wat Photaram, this Buddhist temple was built in the 16th century making it one of the city’s oldest places of worship. There are only six temples in the country anointed with the highest grade of first-class royalty, and this is the first on the list.
Buddhism is by far the most popular religion in Thailand, where 93% of the population actively practices the belief. Hence it’s impressive that this temple houses the most extensive collection of Buddha images in the country, most famously including a 46m-long reclining statue of the prophet. The soles of its feet are 3m high featuring 108 panels exhibiting symbols representing the Buddha.
Wat Pho is also considered the first public university of Thailand where the traditional Thai massage was invented!
Bangkok is one of the craziest cities in the world. With its juxtaposition of tranquil sacred sites right next to the seediest of sex workings, it’s a mind fuck of the tallest order that abundantly feeds both the God and devil in me. I am forever craving my return.
