Sacred Travel: Wat Phra That Doi Suthep
#holythrowback to 2022 when I visited the Wat Phra That Doi Suthep in Chiang Mai, Thailand.
Situated 1,073 meters up on Doi Suthep mountain, it is one of the most sacred sites in Thailand and, indeed, the Buddhist perspective of the world.
Legend tells that a monk named Sumanathera found Buddha’s shoulder bone that glowed, could vanish, and replicate itself at will. King Nu Naone requested the bone and placed it on the back of a white elephant. This elephant climbed to the top of Doi Suthep, trumpeted three times, and then dropped dead. They built this temple on that precise spot, with the bone hidden inside the gold Chedi you see behind me.
Whether you believe this tale or not is of no consequence to the Thai people, and Doi Suthep is now a sacred Buddhist pilgrimage spot, with about 120,000 visitors per month. The views are worth it alone.
94% of this country practices Buddhism, with Islam in second place at 5.37%. As a result, one quick travel around these lands will bombard you with more temples than your camera can handle. I am forced to stagger my Thailand content, but just know too much more is coming.
