Sacred Travel: Marble Mountains
#holythrowback to 2019, when I visited the Marble Mountains in Da Nang, Vietnam.
The highlight was the Am Phu Cave. When observing the demonic statues and dark red lighting, it may come as little surprise that they built this underworld to resemble that of a Buddhist hell. Opened to tourists in 2006, visitors are encouraged to confess their sins in hopes of forgiveness, ensuring their soul does not get stuck here. In fact, Am Phu is Vietnamese for Hell itself.
The Marble Mountains is a collection of five hills, each named after one of the elements. Keep swiping for a sacred Buddhist sanctuary inside of a cave at the top of Mount Thuy. There are a lot of caves here.
Most Vietnamese people do not follow an organised religion, with some variation of a folky nonreligion counting for 73.7% of the population. Buddhism comes in second at 14.9%. That said, some unique smaller religious movements have originated from this nation, such as the strange Caodaism and the fascinating Hòa Hảo.
