Sacred Travel: Caoan Temple
#holythrowback to 2025 when I visited the Cao’an Temple in JinJiang, China.
In a lengthy mission that no one will care about to a place nobody knows about, I flew to this Chinese city for one religion only: Manichaean. In fact, this temple is considered the only Manichaean building which has survived intact, although other smaller ones have been found in China. The reason for this ones endurance, however, is because it was hidden in plain sight as a temple in Buddhist disguise. However, modern experts soon recognised that its main statue was not of Buddha, but Manichaeism’s founder Mani.
Manichaeism is a fascinating 3rd-century religion, led by the prophet Mani, who sought to unify all religions into one unified doctrine which would combat material evil with spiritual good. At one stage, it was the main rival to early Christianity, but the Romans completely stamped it out.
In 2021, Cao’an was honoured as a UNESCO World Heritage and I was so glad I came all this way especially when I accidentally stumbled on a couple having sex against some rocks.
The People’s Republic of China is officially an atheist state with 93% of the country claiming no religion. However, the Chinese government formally recognises Buddhism, Taoism, Islam, and Christianity, as long as they uphold the leadership of the Chinese Communist Party.
