Sacred Travel: Osterreichische Galerie Belvedere
#holythrowback to 2022 when I visited The Samsons Rache painting in Österreichische Galerie Belvedere, Vienna, Austria.
Granted, Samsons Rache (Samson’s Revenge) is not the most recognisable painting in the world, but I am a big fan of the piece and, indeed, all of Johann Georg Platzer’s work (1704–1761). As you can see here, he was a Rococo-style artist, popular in Austria due to his depictions of lively scenes.
You don’t need a Bible scholar to retell the famous story of Samson, a figure with superhuman strength thanks to his long hair. His wife, Delilah, betrayed him by snipping those locks, and then the Philistines forced Samson into slavery. He prayed to God to bring his power back, and he got his wish, yanking the pillars from a Dagon temple, which crushed many of his enemies and himself to death. It is one of my favourite Biblical stories due to its fast pacing and imagination.
The Österreichische Galerie Belvedere is a superb gallery with various essential pieces on display, some of which I have included here for your love. Inarguably, the most notable entry is Gustav Klimt’s The Kiss (photos 2 + 3), but Jacques-Louis David’s Napoleon Crossing the Alps is up there too (photos 4 + 5).
68.2% of Austria’s population is Christian (55.2% are Catholic). Sounds like a lot until you learn it has dropped 25.6% since 1971. No Religion counts for 22.4%, while Islam is third with 8.3%.
