Sacred Travel: Mirogoj Cemetery
#holythrowback to 2022 when I visited Mirogoj Cemetery in Zagreb, Croatia.
Established in 1876, the Mirogoj Cemetery’s primary boasting point is the sheer size of its grounds. With over 300,000 burials to visit, one could spend many hours strolling through the peaceful graveyard and still sense that there’s more to see. That was my experience, anyway.
What’s additionally enjoyable about this plot is that it’s not connected to a church, meaning that every religious path is welcome. That’s why you’ll find graves from numerous faiths, including Catholic, Orthodox, Muslim, Jewish, and even irreligious.
Due to its reverence as a major Zagreb landmark, the cemetery is a hot spot for famous bones. For example, the first president of Croatia, Franjo Tuđman, is buried here (photo 8), as is Matija Ljubek, a canoeist Olympic gold medalist who was shot dead by his brother-in-law (photo 9). Croatia has no official religion, but Christ remains King, with 87.4% of the population following his teachings (78.97% Catholic). “No religion” comes in second with 6.39%, Islam third with 1.32%.
