Sacred Travel: Faust House
#holythrowback to 2021, when I visited the Faust House in Prague, CzechRepublic.
If you’ve ever heard the tales about someone selling their soul to the devil for fame or fortune in return, know that it has its roots in the story of Faust.
Where the historical and the mythical blur is anyone’s guess, but legend tells of Johann Georg Faust, who signed a contract with the devil in exchange for the ability to perform Christ-like miracles and to indulge in various questionable pleasures I dare not repeat. Near the end of his life, Faust began to regret his decision, but a deal is a deal, and after the decided time was up, people heard a loud explosion coming from Faust’s bedroom. When they rushed to check on him, they discovered his walls were plastered with blood while his body lay dead outside in the courtyard, with no logical way to explain how he got out there.
According to some, this entire Satanic origin story took place right here in this building, even if the evidence is difficult to come by. But what we know for sure is that occultist medium Edward Kelley definitely did live here in the late 1500s. Kelley was well known in the neighbourhood for claiming he could see angels while he regualrly blew holes in this roof due to his alchemy experiments with the spirit world. Naturally, I touched this creepy house all over. Gimme some of that sweet Satan juice even if I refuse to sign anything.
Whatever you believe, Prague has a long history of secret societies and magic potions, and you can easily stumble upon many mystical locations and peculiar sculptures without even meaning to. I’ve added some of my favourites to this collection for your consideration.
Czech Republic is notably irreligious, with 78% standing as either atheist, agnostic, or couldn’t care less.
