Sacred Travel: Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe
#holythrowback to 2018 when I visited the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe in Berlin, Germany.
The Jewish faith holds many captivating places of worship around the world, but when it comes to notable landmarks related to their culture, it is those that recall the holocaust that have made the most significant global impact. And no region is more deeply saturated in guilt than Germany’s capital.
Once upon a time, Berlin boasted one of the largest Jewish presences in Europe. But as we all know, around the 1930s, dark ideologies spread through the country like a plague, which not only led to a war that shook the planet to its core but also the systematic murder of roughly six million Jews.
Holocaust orders came from Berlin, and between 1941 and 1945, two-thirds of Europe’s Jewish population were snuffed out of existence. Meanwhile, the Nazis and Axis powers occupied most of Europe and North Africa. Thankfully, the tables flipped after The Allies defeated the Nazi forces in 1945, and the German dictator blasted out his wicked brains with a single bullet. That bang took place about a minute’s walk from this location.
This monument was completed in 2004, featuring 2,711 concrete slabs with three million victims’ names found in the information centre below, ensuring we never forget the atrocities from this period. However, this ugly scar in our history has never healed and continues to fester in numerous ways, with the current horrific Gaza situation just another domino in decades of dominoes.
Perhaps due to the nightmares Berlin has witnessed, the majority of people have turned their back on God, with 72% of the city’s population registered as a religious “nope.” Jesus comes in at 2nd with a weak and falling 19.9%.
