Sacred Travel: The Areopagus
#holythrowback to 2023 when I visited The Areopagus in Athens, Greece.
Translated to the “Hill of Ares,” the Areopagus rock is set in stone for more than one global-shifting spiritual philosophy. Firstly, its relation to Greek mythology will surprise nobody. Legend tells that the war god, Ares, killed Poseidon’s son, Halirrhothius, for raping his daughter. The murder trial took place here, and Ares was acquitted.
Holding that tradition, the Ancient Greeks continued using the Areopagus to judge criminal cases. From murderers to blasphemers to olive tree arsonists, it proved to be the ideal altitude for the governing council to get close to classical deities and determine people’s fate. Its proximity to the Acropolis probably didn’t hurt. You can easily spot that structure in some of these photos.
This location’s historical significance doesn’t end there. It amplifies. Yes, we’re talking about the best-selling publication of all time, The Bible. Acts 17:16–34, known as the Areopagus sermon, occurred on this rock as Apostle Paul gave his most famous speech, denying Pagan gods and emphasising the importance of the One True Creator. Areas from the Bible are usually difficult to verify, but this is 100%. That said, Paul’s egotistical waffling is the most boring text in the Good Book, and I would remove it if I could.
Either way, it worked! Christianity dominated the country, with 90% of the population still dedicated to Greek Orthodoxy. It’s kind of sad that their creamy polytheistic canon is lost to history, but some are trying to revive it. Around 2000 people are assigned to the neopaganistic Hellenic ethnic religion, which the Greek state officially recognises.
