Sacred Travel: Hell Fire Club
#holythrowback to 2020 when I visited the Hell Fire Club on Mount Pelier Hill in Dublin, Ireland.
The dark legends behind this location are so abundant that nobody has ever established the line between truth and fiction. But one thing is certain: whatever happened here was not savoury.
This building was originally a hunting lodge, constructed in 1725. However, when the 1st Earl of Rosse and Freemason Richard Parsons founded the Irish Hell Fire Club in 1737, this became their headquarters. The group would meet here and do God-knows-what, but it may have included drinking whiskey mixed with hot butter, killing cats during black masses, and even sacrificing servants. It’s well reported that they always left a seat empty just in case the devil showed up. In fact, the most famous Hell Fire Club tale is related to this practice.
One stormy night, a stranger sought shelter in the building, and the club invited him to join their card game. After some time, a player accidentally dropped a card, and when he reached down to pick it up, he noticed this stranger had a cloven hoof. It was Lucifer! Having been found out, Satan vanished in a ball of flames.
With numerous other whispers about occult traditions, demonic manifestations, and even cannabilism, many consider this abandoned lodge to be the most haunted place in Dublin. Still, the walk to the top is lovely and highly recommended.
Ireland is super Christian, claiming around 82.3% (69.1% Catholicism). “No Religion” is second with 14.8% and Islam is third with 1.6%.
