Sacred Travel: David Michelangelo
#holythrowback to 2019 when I visited Michaelangelo’s David in the Galleria dell’Accademia, Florence, Italy.
Completed in 1504, this Renaissance sculpture is inarguably up there with the most recognisable masterpieces that the world has ever seen. It is also one of those rare examples when the piece is bigger than your imagination, towering over its viewers at 17 feet.
Speaking of big, you may notice (as I did) that David’s hands are disproportionately large. Apparently, this was intentional, a symbolic feature representing his courage and strength. Meanwhile, other physical attributes appear smaller than they should. I’m talking about his penis. However, this size was typical in ancient art, as tiny dicks were associated with high intellect. No wonder why I’m so stupid! Ha.
According to scholars, the prophet David is a legit historical figure who existed around 1000 BCE. Details of his life are scarce, but his Biblical tales were legendary, especially the one where he defeated the giant Goliath. Additional notable texts include that time when David brought a hundred foreskins to King Saul, and when he sent a man to the frontline of a suicide battle so he could claim his widow. There are no good people in the Old Testament.

As previously discussed, 83.3% of Italians are Christians. Second in line is the 12.4% who are irreligious in some manner.
