Sacred Travel: Holmenkollen Chapel
#holythrowback to 2022 when I visited the Holmenkollen Chapel in Olso, Norway.
Norway is globally recognised for its black metal scene, and it is easy to gauge how the environment has bred such an extreme genre of music. Take the 1903-founded Holmenkollen Chapel, for example. Even as a Christian establishment, it’s metal af!
That may be where the trouble started. In 1992, local Satanic heroes and black metal musicians, Burzum, Faust, and Euronymous, set the church on fire, burning it to the ground. They were sentenced for their crimes, except for Euronymous, who escaped punishment because Burzum (Varg Vikernes) stabbed him to death just before. Yikes. Thanks to maximum penalty Norwegian laws, Vikernes walks free after serving 15 years of his 21-year sentence.
They rebuilt the chapel in 1996, which still looks as dark as they come. The building is registered in Norway’s cultural heritage database.
75.63% of Norway practice some form of Christianity, most notably the 68.68% who sit in the Lutheran denomination of the Church of Norway. 18.32% have no affiliation. As previously noted, the atmosphere of Oslo tells a much darker story, and their art alone is a terrifying result of this chilling a climate. I have included examples to help you understand. It’s awesome.
