Sacred Travel: Christ the King
#holythrowback to 2022 when I visited Christ the King, Almada, Portugal.
So many external factors led to the creation of this towering Jesus statue. One could argue that its manifestation started with the birth of Mary of the Divine Heart in 1863. While living in Porto, Portugal, she received messages from God and convinced Pope Leo XIII to consecrate the world to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Leo did so, calling it “the greatest act of my pontificate”.
Later, in 1931, Brazil erected Christ the Redeemer in Rio de Janeiro. Three years following, the Cardinal Patriarch of Lisbon witnessed the monument and was inspired to create Portugal’s own version. Light discussions took place, but these chats escalated in 1940 when World War II broke out. As a plea to God to keep the country out of the conflict and to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Sacred Heart of Jesus consecration, the project went ahead.
In 1959, they inaugurated the 92-foot Christ standing upon a 269-foot platform placed on an isolated clifftop 133 m above the sea. Dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, he looks across the River Tagus at the city of Lisbon, Portugal’s capital. It’s an impressive sight.
There are some other creepy statues around the grounds, including a sinister-looking Pope Pius XII (photos 3 and 4). For the view, see the final snap.
As you’d imagine, Christianity rules Portugal with a staggering 84.77% stronghold. “No Religion” comes in second with 14.09%, while Islam scrapes in third with 0.42%.
