Sacred Travel: Montjuic Cemetery
#holythrowback to 2019, when I visited the Montjuïc Cemetery in Barcelona, Spain/Catalonia.
One can’t obsess over religion without paying attention to our strange traditions of marking dead burials—and luckily our world is not short of such sites! But while I’ve seen my fair share all around the globe, this 1883-established cemetery will forever stand out as my favourite.
Montjuïc is the mountain the cemetery is built upon; hence, to explore this area, you must continuously walk up a steep incline for hours. But the true unsettling magic lies with the 150,000 gravesites, where you are never far from bumping into a damaged statue or an extraordinarily peculiar tombstone, surely some deal (or trouble) with the afterlife. Not that I believe in such things on any typical day, but once here…
Catholicism remains strong in this city, with 53.2% of the population practising the Christian denomination. Not far behind, however, is a 41% mix of atheists, agnostics, and those indifferent to the conversation.
