Sacred Travel: The Tower of the Bones
#holythrowback to 2019 when I visited The Tower of the Bones in Madrid, Spain, and snapped only one photo.
Crazy but true: parts of Spain were once under Islamic rule. Known then as Al-Andalus, Muslims invaded and conquered the Iberian Peninsula in the 8th century, claiming most of Spain, Portugal, and a sliver of Southern France.
Sharia Law held onto the region for hundreds of years, maintaining some authority until the late 15th century. The Christian kingdoms of the north eventually overpowered, but this long Islamic reign persists in various cultural influences and architectural remains.
One particularly exciting example is these ruins, The Tower of the Bones. Constructed in the 11th century, it was a medieval watchtower, a vital defensive for their Mayrit fortress. Sadly, the awesomely goth name is misleading, as they made it from flint and limestone, not bones. Instead, it received its title due to the nearby ancient Muslim cemetery, Huesa del Raf.
The tower was lost until 1996, when the city remodelled the historic central Plaza de Oriente square. Upon building an underground parking garage, they discovered the long-forgotten base of the structure. They quickly protected it behind a glass slab, giving people something else to look at as they drove around, seeking an empty spot to leave the car.
Christianity’s reclaim of Spain in 1492 remains the dominating faith, with 52.9% Catholic, although 33.7% admit to being non-practising. Islam hardly features anymore, lumped into the 2.5% of "other religions". Meanwhile, atheism and agnosticism count for 16.2% and 15.2%, respectively.
