Sacred Travel: Bibliotheca Philosophica Hermetica
#holythrowback to earlier 2022, when I visited the Bibliotheca Philosophica Hermetica (Ritman Library) in Amsterdam, The Netherlands.
Founded in 1957 and boasting over 25,000 books on European mysticism, this library can be overwhelming to even the most seasoned of esoteric scholar. Here you can find unlimited texts on many exciting topics, including magic, Gnosticism, alchemy, Theosophy, Kaballah, Sufism and Freemasonry. But their primary pride lies in their name, with their Hermetica collection. They even have the first edition of the Corpus Hermeticum (1471), but you have to book and pay extra to see it. Sadly, I did not have the time :((((
Famed author Dan Brown was so impressed with the knowledge found within these walls that he donated $300,000 to the organisation, affording them to digitise the pages and build The Embassy of the Free Mind museum around it.
On my visitation date, they had quite an impressive Rosicrucianism exhibition. Rosicrucianism is not a spiritual order I am particularly in love with (I’ve read too much about it starting as a hoax), but these in-depth writings and articles did force me to question my stance, and I look forward to deeper exploration.
55.4% of The Netherlands identify as "nonreligious". The term "Ietsism" originates in Dutch and is a type of agnosticism, where one feels an inward suspicion that there must be something spiritual going on, but we simply cannot know. Beliefs like this and "Christian atheism" are on the rise.
