Sacred Travel: Spinoza Monument
#holythrowback to 2022 when I visited the Spinoza Monument in Amsterdam, The Netherlands, and took ONE (1) photo.
There is no “religion” more fundamental to Janthopoyism than Pantheism—so much so that our name is derived from that name. It is the understanding that the collective Universe is identical to divinity (or “God” if you can handle it). Such teachings predate most faiths, as it is central to indigenous beliefs and Eastern theologies like Hinduism (Brahmanism) and Daoism. However, as usual, the West likes to claim everything for themselves, and they steal Pantheism through the Amsterdam-born philosopher Baruch Spinoza (1632 – 1677).
Spinoza’s writings on spiritual rationalism were unfathomably influential in the Enlightenment era but were so wild that people were too quick to miscategorise them. Because he taught that God was the unity of all that exists and the identity of spirit and nature, the traditional monotheistic crowd deemed him an atheist. However, as time passed, many have dubbed Spinoza the “prophet” of Pantheism, a hilarious yet lovely fate for man. Better than, say, Giordano Bruno, whose Pantheistic ideas precede Spinoza’s, and led to him being burned at the stake in 1600.
This statue was unveiled in 2008. Sitting next to Spinoza is the 20-faced icosahedron shape representing the Universe created by the human mind. What a wonderful work to admire, especially considering the endless number of Jesus and Buddha statues in the world.
The once-Christian nation of The Netherlands has fallen to second place (40%) as “No Religion” now rules strong (58%). This is an inevitable global trend.
