Sacred Travel: Atlantis Bookshop
#holythrowback to 2021 when I visited the Atlantis Bookshop in London, UK.
Speaking of spooky locations, few boast an A-list of mystical minds like the esoteric Atlantis Bookshop. Established in 1922, its famous customers include:
⭒ Aleister Crowley (founder of Thelema, known as "the wickedest man in the world").
⭒ Dion Fortune (co-founder of the Society of the Inner Light).
⭒ W. B. Yeats (poet).
⭒ Israel Regardie (occultist writer).
However, there is no greater iconic associate than Gerald Gardner.
Gardner is a top figure in bringing Contemporary Paganism into public awareness. He developed his own branch of Wiccanism named Gardnerian Wicca, which remains one of the most popular forms of the practice today, and he authored several seminal books on the topic. As a result, he is called the "Father of Wicca".
Gardner’s interest in occult arts flourished when he attended meetings by The Order of the Hidden Masters in Atlantis Bookshop’s basement. He eventually formed his own Coven, whose gatherings took place here too, and not long following, he published his 1949 book High Magic’s Aid through the bookshop. In the 2nd photo, you may spot a statue of the man’s head.
The bookshop continues strong, hosting exhibitions and workshops while launching books. In recent decades, the Germanic pagan group, the Odin Brotherhood, regularly met at the shop. Also, please note the Theosophy/Helena Blavatsky section in photo 3. We will be dedicating A LOT of space to that religion in the near future.
No surprise that Christianity rules England with 46.3% of the population, but it’s worth noting that this marks a dizzying 25.4% plummet over the last two decades. Conversely, "No Religion" has risen 22.1% in the same period, now at 36.7%. The second biggest religion is Islam, with 6.7% adherents, a figure which has more than doubled since 2001.
