Sacred Travel: London Mithraeum
#holythrowback to 2021 when I visited the London Mithraeum in London, UK.
Fun fact: The city of London was originally founded by the Romans, under the name Londinium. They ruled the land from around the mid-40s AD until 410 AD. During this period, many mystery religions spread across the empire, and one of those was Mithraism.
The god Mithra was of Persian roots as a member of the Zoroastrian pantheon of deities. As the Romans tended to do, they lifted the figure and wrote their own signature legends behind the legend until a popular cult developed with rituals and underground temples. Mithraism grew so large that scholars consider it a prominent rival of early Christianity.
Of course, Jesus soon dominated the scene, and Mithraism was suppressed and ultimately eliminated with almost all evidence destroyed by the end of the 4th century. Hence, when a 1954 construction job uncovered the 3rd-century Mithraeum, historians labelled it the most famous 20th-century Roman finding in London. Such discoveries are invaluable.
Annoyingly, the structure was moved brick-by-brick several feet from the initial spot, while the Museum of London claimed most of the best artefacts for themselves. Classic. Nevertheless, those meticulous archaeologists perfectly replicated the site using the same stones and bricks, so it’s still cool.
The general public has long forgotten Mithras, but imagine how different life would be if Europe had chosen this godhead over Jesus! Instead, Christianity continues to reign with a 79.2% and 46.3% stronghold on Italy and England, respectively.
