#holythrowback to 2021 when I visited The English headquarters of the Theosophical Society in London, England, United Kingdom.
Theosophy founder Helena Blavatsky belongs to the world, having made a substantial spiritual dent in Europe, North America, and South Asia. Consequently, you’ll find the Theosophical Society dotted around the globe. But there is no doubt that London held a unique place in her life.
Blavatsky established the Theosophical Society in New York City, 1875, but relocated to London in 1885. Here, she finished her most treasured work, the two-volume, 1478-page Secret Doctrine. It was published in 1888, and then, in 1891, Blavatsky died as a victim of the British influenza epidemic. She was 59.
Her ashes were divided between the three places she loved the most: London, New York, and under her statue in Adyar, India. Following her passing, the organisation’s other founding members met in London and argued over who was the rightful successor. As usual, everyone thought it should be themselves, and Theosophy split.
I hung outside the London Theosophical Society during COVID, meaning their doors were closed to visitors. Sadly, they never opened again, and from what I can tell, they are relocating.
Theosophy is a significant theology in occult circles but does not register on any census. They are estimated to have tens of thousands of adherents worldwide, falling slightly shy of something like Christianity and their 2.6 billion. Indeed, Christians make up around 46.3% of England’s religious landscape.
