Sacred Travel: Brockton Point Totem Poles
#holythrowback to earlier-2024 when I visited the totem poles at Brockton Point, Stanley Park in Vancouver, Canada.
At 405 hectares, Stanley Park is one-fifth larger than New York City’s Central Park and boasts half a million trees. In 2014, Tripadvisor rated it the “top park in the entire world.” Yet even with so much to offer, nothing can beat these Totem Poles, as they are not only the most visited tourist attraction in the park but also in Vancouver and British Columbia! Maybe because they’re free to see!
These nine totem poles date back as early as the 1800s and were carved by several different indigenous nations. Unfortunately, the wooden material is gradually rotting from this city’s harsh weather, and some were replaced by replicas.
Totem poles are globally appreciated native American symbols, but in actuality, they are only part of Western Canadian and Northwestern USA cultures. Despite their reputation, these sculptures are not items of worship. Instead, they tell mythological stories or record notable events. Truthfully, the purpose of each totem pole is as unique as the clans who produced them, with the word “totem” meaning “kinship group”.
5% of Canadians are indigenous, falling in either the First Nations, Inuit, or Méti people. There are over 600 recognised Canadian First Nation groups alone, yet regardless of their distinct cultures, they are much like any aboriginal society around the globe, with spiritual beliefs that include animism, shamanism, polytheism, and pantheism. Sadly, the vast majority have been Christianised. This faith goes for most of the country too, with 53.3% of the population following Christ. But as is the trend in the Western world, “No religion” is rising, already in second place with 34.6%.
