Sacred Travel: Mercado Sonora
#holythrowback to earlier-2024 when I visited Mercado Sonora in Mexico City, Mexico.
Due to overcrowding in the city, this marketplace was established in the 1950s, just southeast of the historic centre. But what was intended to function as a forum for standard merchandise ultimately became famous for a whole different reason: witchcraft.
With rows upon rows of herbal medicines and occult items, it is a pity about the intense stalls of which I could not take photos to show you. However, hopefully what I managed to document accurately illustrates that Latin Magic is alive and well in this part of the world. And we’re not talking cute little Westernised Wicca with colourful candles and positive affirmations. We are talking the big game here, with dried skunks to thicken the blood, deer eyeballs to ward off evil, and oils that terminate pregnancies. It’s pure Santería Brujería voodoo.
Moreover, this place is NOT for tourists or even locals, as many refuse to go, with residents expressing shock that I went. The reasons are plentiful. One is how dangerous the neighbourhood is. But another is the cruel animal section, where live puppies, cats, doves, and chickens are crammed in cages. It was as heartbreaking as it was stinky. Again, cameras are not permitted, but I snuck some, which you can see in the final two snaps.
The Spanish forced Christianity into Mexico, and it now accounts for 91.3% of the country’s faith (77.8% Catholicism). That noted, most of these practices have been syncretised with their rich native traditions, such as the Mayans and Aztecs. It’s a deep topic we shall explore in numerous posts to come because when it comes to strange magic, Mexico is like nothing I’ve felt.
