Sacred Travel: Miami City Cemetery
#holythrowback to 2020 when I visited the Miami City Cemetery in Miami, Florida, USA.
Founded in 1897, Miami City Cemetery is a yucky yuck place. The gravesites are racially segregated, with the white families buried on the east with the far better-kempt plot, and the black families on the west, which are falling into disarray, their tiny markers often shattered and illegible. This bleak separation hurts even more when you learn that the black labour force essentially built Miami anyway.
Adding to this yard’s unsettling aura is that it’s a hot spot for crime, and authorities warn tourists never to visit alone or at night. I went during the day, but I was by myself. All’s well that ends well.
Nevertheless, numerous notable corpses have rotted here, including the First Mayor of Miami, John B. Reilly, and the "Mother of Miami", Julia Tuttle, the only woman in America to found a major city. Because of these names, the U.S. National Register of Historic Places added Miami City Cemetery to its list in 1989.
If you’re ever in the neighbourhood, I beg you to check out the nearby Wynwood Art District. I have travelled across the globe and gazed upon many exceptional pieces of street art, but no collection was remotely as impressive as what I witnessed decorating these walls.
Christianity is the winning faith in Miami, with 68% (39% Protestant, 27% Catholicism). Judaism is at 9%, while the ever-globally-growing "No religion" sits at 21%.
