#holythrowback to 2020, when I visited the Library of Congress in Washington DC, USA. More on topic, when I witnessed a copy of the Gutenberg Bible on display.
The Gutenberg machine revolutionised the printing industry, producing 180 Bible copies over two years rather than the three years it took for ONE copy by hand. Of those 180 initially printed, 50 survived and only 21 of those were complete. Here’s one of them. The USA owns 11 in total, second to Germany, who has 13. The UK is third with 8.
Having sold over five billion copies worldwide, the Bible is the best-selling publication of all time. It still sells 100 million each year, and has been translated into 690+ languages, about half of every language we have. The Gutenberg Bible features the Latin Hebrew Old Testament and Greek New Testament. It is argued to be the world’s most valuable book, although no copy has been sold since 1978.
There are, of course, other Bibles too. For example, The Satanic Bible by Anton LaVey, published in 1969. It is the dumbest "scripture" I’ve ever read. Meanwhile, there’s the Janthopoyism Bible!
Preorder it now! Is it better than the Satanic Bible? Almost certainly. But is it better than the Christian Bible? Best you find out!
Swipe for bonus photos from The Library of Congress. Boasting over 115 million items (while adding 7,000 a day) it’s one of the largest libraries in the world. Also, note the full (P)EGOT set at the end.
