Sacred Travel: Uluru
#holythrowback to earlier-2023 when I visited Uluru/Ayers Rock in Red Centre of Australia’s Northern Territory.
No landmark is more sacred in Australia (or the world) than this 2,831 ft tall 550 million-year-old sandstone. It is particularly important to the Pitjantjatjara people due to their indigenous ceremonies dating back tens of thousands of years.
The rock face works like Aboriginal scripture, each crevice telling intricate whispers about the creation of the land, some myths so secret that you are not allowed to take photos from certain angles. However, they have kindly passed down several Uluru folklore stories, including the murder of a blue-tongue lizard and a deadly battle between giant snakes.
The government returned ownership of Uluru to the indigenous locals in 1985, which was the right thing to do. For them, the earth is a living being that ties into our broad understanding of the Australian mythology Dreamtime. These concepts speak of ancestral spirits that formed the terrain; hence, their spiritual tales heavily focus on holy locations rather than temporary individuals. Such perspectives are unique to these Aboriginals and predate everything else we know, possibly existing even 75,000 years ago.
And yet, Christianity still dominates the country, with a 43.9% fanbase.
Maybe it was heatstroke, but I noticed many strange things within this stone, its cracks seemingly shifting to resemble new creatures as I felt a ton of power radiating from its towering presence. Something about it didn’t feel normal, but I knew that whatever it was, I wasn’t grasping it. Regardless, it’s one of those epic moments that will only grow as a genuine life highlight I’ll recall forever.
