#holythrowback to early-2023 when I visited Mt Eden/Maungawhau in Auckland, New Zealand.
As one of 53 volcanos in Auckland, 15,000 years have passed since Mt Eden’s last eruption, which left behind a conical hill reaching up to 650ft, the highest point in the city. There are platforms here for the one million annual visitors to enjoy the expansive views. They used Prince Alfred’s elephant to transport the material to build these sitting spots. The royal animal was rewarded with lollies, buns and beer. Surprisingly, the “Mount Eden” name is not Biblical; instead, it honours George Eden, the 1st Earl of Auckland.
Maungawhau is the original Māori name for the location, which means “mountain of the whau tree”. It is a sacred place to the indigenous Māori people. This holy status is especially true for the 160ft deep crater in the centre, which is considered “tapu”, meaning “of spiritual restriction”. Hence, nobody is allowed down there.
The Māori religion is similar to many traditional animistic beliefs, whereby they personify natural elements separately, yet everything is connected by the same life force (mauri). Of course, when the Europeans arrived, they were like, “not a chance” and they worked hard to convert these people to Christianity. They did a good job, with 37.3% of New Zealanders praising Jesus, although “no religion” is even higher at 48.6%.
Much like most of the world, there has been a newfound push in recent decades for New Zealand to further recognise their indigenous Māori culture. But sadly, any remnants of their polytheistic beliefs have long been watered down by enforced Christian concepts.

Janthopoyism is a spiritual philosophy meets self-improvement program.
We view the Absolute collection of all Universal Energy to be the highest power. You are part of that power. You are an extension of divinity.
The ultimate purpose of this power is to evolve, and we each have a unique part to play in this progression. The details of your role are relayed to you every moment of your life via emotional notifications.
The tricky bit is that human beings have developed a communication barrier between themselves and this instruction.
This barrier is called "the brain".
But never fear! By utilising some very simple practices, you can open the flow of exchange, granting you access to the ether of infinite ideas, the infallible path of your guided destiny, and the recollection of your holiness.
Which is basically a wanky way of saying that your life is about to get a whole bunch better.
Join the movement before it becomes too mainstream.
