Sacred Travel: Christchurch Cathedral
#holythrowback to early 2023 when I (sort of) visited the Christ Church Cathedral in Christchurch, New Zealand.
The Anglican Christchurch Cathedral is the seat of the Bishop of Christchurch, and God HATES this place. The cathedral has been repeatedly damaged by earthquakes, including in 1881, 1888, 1901, 1922, and 2010. Then came the monster quake of 2011, New Zealand’s fifth-deadliest disaster, killing 185 people and wrecking the church beyond usage. They nearly got rid of the whole thing too, but are now hoping to be up and running by 2027, ready for God’s next move.
In the meantime, the community uses the Cardboard Cathedral (photos 3 & 4), which is dubbed as such because its frame is built from 86 cardboard tubes.
Without visiting these Christian buildings, you already know which team this city is batting for. Originally anointed Ōtautahi by the native Māori people, the white invaders renamed the place to Christchurch, pushing their Jesus agenda again. That said, there is a fair amount of representation around.
Most tragically is the Islamic Mosque Al Noor (photos 5 & 6), where, in 2019, a white supremacist gunman killed 51 Muslims and injured 40 more. He was sentenced to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole, the first-ever such ruling in NZ history. Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern called it "one of New Zealand’s darkest days" and announced a complete ban on semi-automatic weapons.
We can also find Buddhism (Fo Guang Shan, photo 7) and Hinduism (Hare Krishna Temple, photo 8) here. Photo 9 is the 185 Chairs for each loss in the 2011 earthquake. Photo 10 is a bonus just for you.
And yet, after all that, 48.6% of New Zealanders state they have no religion, while Christianity slides in second with 37.3%.
