Sacred Travel: Tierra Santa
#holythrowback to early-2024 when I visited Tierra Santa (Holy Land) in Bueno Aires, Argentina.
Inaugurated in 1999, Tierra Santa boasts itself as “the world’s first religious theme park”. That is not accurate, considering Holy Land USA opened in 1995. Regardless, it is a strange location where over 500 plastic figurines take you through the Abrahamic timeline with notable weight placed on Christianity.
The original purpose was to celebrate Holy Week, but it grew into a much bigger project that included a crash course in Genesis and a smaller model of the Biblical Jerusalem city. The most crucial feature portrays the life of Jesus, from birth to crucifixion, ending with a dramatic resurrection, as you can see in photo 9.
If the attempt was to create something spiritual, then the cartoonish absurdity kinda gets in the way. Still, the church was never one for self-awareness, and Pope Francis blessed the park in 2000. Seeing as he was born in Bueno Aires, it’s the least he could do.
A 2020 survey claimed that 92% of Argentines are Catholic, but 20% of those are non-practicing. However, alternate estimates are less generous, with 62.9% of Catholics reported elsewhere. Studies indicate 18.9% of locals have “no religion”, while everything else falls into the measly 4% of “Other”.
