Sacred Travel: Cemiterio Sao Joao Batista
#holythrowback to 2020 when I visited the Cemitério São João Batista in Rio, Brazil.
Every good cemetery deserves a quirk to secure itself in our memories, and Cemitério São João Batista (translated: Saint John the Baptist Cemetery) is a distinct resting ground for the Brazilian deceased. Established in 1852, the thousands of gravesites here are squeezed so tightly together that they create narrow pathways like a maze, often leading to dead ends while confusing the biological navigation system.
Furthermore, the Jesus-heavy display of artistic stonework covers various stylistic offerings, for example, neoclassical, neo-gothic, and art-deco, turning the necropolis into a highly desirable ending place with many notable Brazilian skeletons dotted around, including bossa nova virtuoso, Antônio Carlos Jobim. The only issue is that you can’t find any of them! However, you may spot one other world-famous religious landmark in some of these photos, but that’s a story for another day.
Brazil is a fiercely dedicated Christian country, with a massive 88.77% devotees. No religion counts for 8.04%, leaving a minuscule 3.19% sliver for alternative faiths. I do appreciate how this graveyard is named after John the Baptist. I dig him, he was the Jesus before Jesus, such an unsung hero from the Bible, and still worshipped today by the Mandaeans as the actual final prophet.
