Sacred Travel: Sanctuary of Las Lajas
#holythrowback to 2024 when I visited the Sanctuary of Las Lajas in Ipiales, Colombia.
Even if you’re not religious, the Sanctuary of Las Lajas is a sight to behold with a story to tell. The legend begins centuries ago when a mother and her mute daughter were caught in a vicious storm and sought shelter in a cave. Here, the mute daughter witnessed the image of the Virgin Mary on one of the rocks (photo 5) and was instantly cured of her ailment, shouting "Look!" at her mother.
Do you believe such a tale? It doesn’t matter, because the people of the area sure did. They constructed this Gothic Revival-style masterpiece in that exact spot, dubbing the building "a miracle of God in the abyss." It is considered one of the most beautiful churches in the world, working as a pilgrimage site where Christians make the mission from every corner of the globe. Pope Pius XII recognised the image of Mary with a Pontifical Decree of coronation in 1951.
Ipiales is just back from the Ecuador border making it tricky to get to. My mission was made further complicated when a dog bit my calf on the walk from the town to the sanctuary (Photo 9). Thank the Lordie I was wearing jeans because that extra layer prevented a proper skin break. But still, it really hurt, went a wicked shade of purple, and worst of all, I have since developed a slight phobia of street dogs. Gotta get over that because it’s a shameful loss.
Colombia is a strong Christian nation with around 88.5% of the country holding the faith. 78.2% are Catholics alone.
