Sacred Travel: The Virgin of the Mystic Rose
#holythrowback to earlier 2024 when I visited The Virgin of the Mystic Rose in Medellin, Colombia.
One Medellín conversation that the locals avoid but the tourists adore is that of Pablo Escobar. The drug lord was raised and ultimately killed in the city, leaving his Cartel’s controversial legacy as a permanent fixture of Medellín reputation.
Irrespective of one’s opinion, there are numerous places in Medellín where visitors can delve into the wild backstory of Pablo. However, none hold the same spiritual reverence as The Virgin of the Mystic Rose. This sacred shrine, dedicated to Mother Mary, is renowned for its non-judgmental granting of miracles. It accepts all requests, whether they are wholesome or sinful. This unique aspect proved valuable to Escobar and his associates, as many of their prayers were less than virtuous. Hence, the shrine earned the moniker “the Virgin of the Assassins.”
Pablo Escobar was shot down in 1993, but this site remains strong, its popularity continuing to grow, now considered somewhat of a pilgrimage location. People pray daily in the area as thankful plaques are donated when their pleas are fulfilled.
Christianity dominates Colombia, with 87% following (70.2% Catholic). That noted, in 2023, the country was rated the 22nd most challenging place to be a Christian due to territorial disputes, organised corruption, and, assumedly, the infinite amounts of coke and prostitution available.
