Sacred Travel: Huaca Pucllana
#holythrowback to 2020 when I visited Huaca Pucllana in Lima, Peru.
Slapped in the middle of a residential neighbourhood in Peru’s capital, here you may find this 500CE 22-meter-high clay pyramid. The pre-Incan Lima Culture built it for two reasons. The first was as an administration zone where the ruling class took control over the area’s water supply. And the second was as a holy establishment of worship.
Religious beliefs of the Lima Culture civilisation were heavily based on magic, with the entire world animated by spirits that had to be appeased or else. Like many indigenous South American societies, human sacrifice was a standard method of keeping bad juju at bay. These people were also famous for their drug habits, with hallucinogens used for ceremonial advancements and coca leaves abused to stay alert and curb hunger pains.
Around 700CE, the Wari people flourished and claimed this land, turning it into a sacred burial site for nobles. 1,300 years later, archaeologists unearthed the first intact tomb, revealing the skeletons of two adults wearing masks and a sacrificed child.
The Waru people worshipped the ever-popular Staff God from the Andes. Of course, when the Spanish conquerors hit up the country in the 16th century, they enforced their Catholicism ideals too. This colonised destruction of culture was a complete success, and the Catholics still rule with 76.03% of the population devoted. A further 18.47% are other Christian denominations.
