Sacred Travel: Sri Dalada Maligawa
#holythrowback to 2025 when I visited Sri Dalada Maligawa aka the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic in Kandy, Sri Lanka.
Is this the holiest place in Sri Lanka? Probably! Most famously known as the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, this name is a perfect description as they built this large area around one of the Buddha’s teeth. It is said that after Siddhartha Gautama was cremated with four teeth passed on as divine keepsakes. That said, a 2024 survey found over 30 museums and temples claiming to have one, which rumour has it that the tooth was seized and destroyed by the Portuguese in 1560 anyway.
Whether Sri Lanka’s treasure is authentic or even exists is hardly relevant anymore, as the very idea of its presence holds immense power. It is believed that whoever possesses the tooth in turn controls the entire country, which is why the temple was unsuccessfully attacked by militant organisations in 1989 and 1998.
Sri Lanka is officially a Buddhist country with over 70% of the nation adhering to the religion. They are so serious about it that if you ever heard a story about a tourist being deported for a Buddha tattoo, chances are it’s from here. And as someone with a Dharmachakra inked on my arm, let me tell you this was a daily problem.
